Arles, spring 1889. Van Gogh sets up his easel facing the city. He is still searching for the light of the South, that paradise glimpsed a year before. But something has changed.
A Paradise Behind Bars
Look at this foreground: bluish poplar trunks, twisted, upright. Their bare branches claw at the pale sky. Behind them, the orchards burst into white blossom. The brushstrokes are short, nervous, vibrating. Van Gogh builds depth through layers of cold greens and blues. The city of Arles appears on the horizon — bell towers, rooftops, grey silhouettes. It is beautiful and unreachable.
The Fracture of the Japanese Dream
In May 1888, Van Gogh was already painting Arles: yellow and purple meadows, blazing light, a Japoniste utopia. A year later, everything has shifted. Nervous crises take hold. The artist will soon enter the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum. This View of Arles is born in that fragile in-between. The palette remains luminous — a fully assumed Impressionist inheritance. But the trunks block access to the garden. The nature cultivated by human hands suddenly seems out of reach. Van Gogh paints a paradise and its impossibility.
Vincent van Gogh
Born in the Netherlands, Vincent van Gogh (1853–1890) did not devote himself to painting until the age of 27. Self-taught, he passed through Paris, absorbed Impressionism, and fed on Japanese prints. In Arles, he dreamed of an artists’ community and produced in just a few months a teeming body of work. His Post-Impressionism — expressive colours, rhythmic marks, nature charged with emotion — would pave the way for Expressionism and transform the art of the twentieth century.
Think about it
💭 Between the View of Arles of 1888 — radiant and Japoniste — and this one, barred by dark trunks, a single year passed and everything collapsed. Can we truly read a work without knowing the life of the one who painted it?
