Rembrandt

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669), the undisputed master of the Dutch Golden Age, revolutionised the art of portraiture and chiaroscuro. Born in Leiden to a modest family, he established himself in Amsterdam where his career enjoyed meteoric success before suffering financial and personal setbacks, including the death of his wife Saskia and several of his children. Despite these trials, his artistic genius continued to evolve, transitioning from a meticulous and brilliant style to a deeper, more introspective expressiveness. His immense body of work, comprising more than 300 paintings, 300 engravings and 2,000 drawings, bears witness to a tireless quest for human truth, transforming the representation of the ordinary into the sublime and leaving an indelible mark on the history of Western art.
