La Tour

Georges de La Tour (1593-1652) was a French painter from Lorraine, considered one of the masters of French Caravaggism and Tenebrism. Born in Vic-sur-Seille, he settled in Lunéville where he achieved great success, becoming painter in ordinary to King Louis XIII in 1639. His work is characterized by a dramatic treatment of light, often represented by a simple candle illuminating religious or secular scenes in profound darkness. Among his most famous paintings are “The Newborn Child,” “Saint Joseph the Carpenter,” and “The Penitent Magdalene.” Although highly appreciated during his lifetime, he fell into oblivion after his death and was not rediscovered until the early twentieth century, when he became recognized as a genius of Baroque painting.
